Senior Software Engineer

Venice, CA or Remote

We have built a modern security tool that is reflective of our culture. It is dynamic, responsive, seamless integration and deployment, domain expertise, mature, with a programmatic approach. Everyone on our team embodies these traits which makes for a trusting, empowering, courteous, and (oddly) simple environment. Our product is no bullshit and so are we.

By removing impediments, we enable others to more effectively accomplish their tasks and goals. Through this, we all win. We are a team; Team SigSci.

This position is listed in Venice, CA but it can be remote. Most of our engineering team is distributed so our environment is setup for remote work. You wouldn’t be the only one not based out of HQ. Experience working in a remote environment is highly preferred.

The Signal Sciences agent runs on customer machines processing web-based requests. Since it runs on customer’s hardware, performance, latency, stability and security are paramount. As part of the team, you’ll be working through the entire lifecycle: design, build, test, documentation, monitor and work with customers when things don’t go as planned.

While we are a security company, no prior experience in security is necessary. Most important is your track record in building world-class software and servers.

Requirements

  • experience in building and maintaining high volume, high performance servers. As our customers have high volume, so must we.
  • strong concurrency experiences (threads, co-routines, events) along with memory management experience and debugging. How else are you going to build high performance servers?
  • TCP/IP and linux sockets experiences. Because Internet.
  • Fluency in Linux/Unix shell and all the tools and toys that come with it. For better or worse, in 2016 bash is still used frequently to get things done.

With this, it’s likely you’ll have a c/c++/java/go/rust background. However exceptional candidates from other backgrounds are welcome. We have many projects that require different skill sets.

Bonus:

  • HTTP protocol experience. We’d be a little worried if you had no experience at all.
  • Data serialization experiences. What were the pros and cons of what you are currently doing?
  • Performance wins. Do you love to make graphs look like they fell off a cliff? Tell us a story here.
  • Multi-tier software architecture. The agent doesn’t run isolation, and neither do you.
  • Software product experience and release cycle management. This might be true software products or OSS projects that have releases. Got a great backwards compatibility nightmare? We’d love to hear.
  • UI/UX doesn’t always means “GUI”. We aim to create products that security professionals, operation teams, and developers love to use. As part of that we want our product to be easy to use, easy to install, with great command line and linux experience. If you are passionate about The User, we have many projects here. What does UI/UX mean in a CLI environment?
  • Do you love lexers, parsers and grammars? Oh we have some great projects around this as well.

Benefits:

  • 100% insurance coverage (health, dental, vision) for you and a dependent
  • Flexible hours with a focus on work life balance…for real
  • Fair pay. We believe in paying people a fair salary. No bonus. No B.S.
  • Join a growing startup in a golden moment. We don’t need money, we’re still small so you can make an impact and get your hands into a ton of things, be surrounded and work with some experts in their domain
  • We’re adults. We believe in respectful communication, collaboration, ownership, and a desire to learn something new. Oh, and we strongly believe in recycling.

FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD. APPLY.

To apply, send your CV, a cover letter addressing why you want to work at Signal Sciences (specifically…we know when it’s a generic letter), tell us who you are, and what about this opportunity excites you. Please also include a link to a portfolio, Github, and anything else you think would make you stick out amongst the crowd.

Signal Sciences is an equal opportunity employer. We eagerly seek applicants of diverse background and hire without regard to race, color, gender identity, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, physical abilities, age, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
