Signal Sciences Journey and Next Chapter

It’s hard to believe that it has been almost six and a half years since we started this journey. We’ve grown from a tiny startup in a Venice beach house to the leader in web application and API protection, working with amazing customers around the globe. Today we have some exciting news to announce: Fastly is acquiring Signal Sciences. You can read the press release here. While it will take a few months for the deal to close, I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on our journey and the exciting path ahead of us.

As many of you know, our ambitious mission to modernize web application and API security all started at a place most people wouldn’t think of: Etsy, the global marketplace for handmade goods. Etsy was one of the earliest pioneers in DevOps, and we experienced first hand the challenges that enterprises faced in an era of digital transformation. We struggled with attempting to protect our key web applications and APIs as the legacy web application firewalls that were on the market caused more problems than they solved and slowed down our engineering and DevOps teams. Out of necessity, we built our own solution to protect Etsy’s applications and recognized a new approach was badly needed not just by us, but by any company embracing DevOps and digital transformation.

Using these lessons learned, we formed Signal Sciences in 2014 with a focus on delivering web application and API protection directly for developers, DevOps teams and security teams. We built our product to make security visible, accessible and effective. Most importantly, we wanted our solution to empower everyone, and foster the sort of collaboration needed to successfully embrace DevOps and digital transformation. We wanted to be trusted partners –– not vendors.

Fast forward to today, Signal Sciences is one of the fastest-growing web application security companies in the world and long ago outgrew that small house in Venice. We now protect trillions of web requests per month for household brands in every business vertical from finance to media to healthcare to manufacturing. Our Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 83 is both an industry-leading measure of customer satisfaction and emblematic of the trust we’ve built with our customers.

Equally as exciting is the next chapter ahead of us. We’ve been working hard to scale our business since our formation. And while we’ve succeeded in helping many of the world’s largest organizations protect their applications through digital transformation and the shift to cloud, our ambition has always been to broaden our reach and do more for our customers. As we’ve gotten to know the team at Fastly, it was clear that their vision for the future of technology matches our own.

Fastly is one of the fastest growing and most exciting companies in the world. Fastly not only offers an incredibly powerful edge cloud platform, but they’ve also designed a software-defined network capable of handling an impressive 800+ billion requests per day. Many of the world’s largest organizations depend on Fastly to empower their developers to build the most groundbreaking apps — all optimized for speed, security, and scale.

As Fastly expands their leadership position in edge cloud technology and fortifies their security offering, it is natural for Signal Sciences to play a role in that broader mission. We share many commonalities, including a focus on developer empowerment, powerful yet easy-to-use products, and an emphasis on strengthening collaboration between teams.

By joining forces, we’ll go further and faster. We are combining two best-of-breed platforms: Fastly’s leading edge cloud platform and Signal Sciences award-winning web application and API protection platform. Together, we will play an even greater role in helping our customers secure and drive their digital transformation, which is so critical in today’s environment. I’m so excited about what we’re going to be able to build together for our customers.
