“I’ve written my first security-related blog post, attended my first security conferences, and opened my first GitHub ticket as part of our efforts to keep things collaborative between sales, marketing and product,” Max Anderson begins reflecting on his time at Signal Sciences.
As part of the enterprise sales team, Max has conversations with security, cloud and devops teams about challenges they face securing their applications and how Signal Sciences can help. In addition to being known for his technical sharpness and killer sales skills, Max is also known around the office as one of the nicest guys ever, and as the dad of our favorite chihuahua, Chester.
Max was the first person to join the Signal Sciences sales team in June 2015. Prior to joining, Max worked in various sales and sales operations roles at other software companies, but his security knowledge was “basically limited to ‘change your password once in a while’ and ‘don’t click funny looking links.’”
Understanding the Needs of Security Professionals
Although he has a background in enterprise software, joining Signal Sciences has enabled Max to broaden his knowledge base by understanding the needs of security professionals and the software ecosystem they work within: “The biggest win for me has been the progress I’ve made toward mastering an area of technology that was new to me,” he said. “Web application security is just an incredibly fascinating and relevant space right now.”
Other developments Max notes include growing the sales team exponentially since he joined, hitting several big revenue milestones, and signing the company’s first Fortune 1000, Fortune 100 and Fortune 50 clients.
“I feel lucky to work with a group of such talented, but down to earth people,” he says. “Everyone on the team is approachable, willing to help, and aligned around the same goals of building a great product and a great company.”
Max points out as Signal Sciences has grown, “one of the things we’ve done is built processes and invested in technology to put ourselves in a good position to continue scaling.”
Helping Customers Solve Web Application Security Problems
“We’ve also learned so much about our customers, the challenges they face, why they like our product, and how they make decisions. It feels like with each new engagement, we’re able to apply that knowledge.
One of the things that sets Signal Sciences apart is the genuine interest the whole team has in helping our customers solve hard problems. That empathy is something we’ll need to make sure we maintain as we grow and bring on more people in customer-facing roles.”
For several Signal Sciences employees, including founders Andrew Peterson, Zane Lackey and Nick Galbreath, this is the first time working on the product side. The empathy Max mentions is ingrained in our culture, who we are and how we connect with customers.
